Fall 1999 is a key season in the MISN history. The team fresh from winning
the Indoor championship was looking to renew with success in the Outdoor league.
Mondeo was still in the picture and now there was also a new team Goodfellas
who had won the Fall 98 league. But lots of players had left and we needed
new blood in the team. Hugo and Tevin set
out recruiting new players for MISN. We would scout the games being played
at the reservoir and at drop-in to look for potential players. Santiago,
an old friend of Tevin, was recruited in the Arts computer
lab and he brought along his roommate Mark as the keeper.
Giorgio was recruited by Tevin at drop-in
soccer in the fieldhouse. Hugo convinced Amana
and Chris that MISN was the team that they wanted to be with.
Tevin snatched the Nordic striker, Peter,
under the nose of our rivals Goodfellas. Mani, under the
advice of Hugo, left the Redmen to play for MISN.
Alex ‘Chilavert’ Piera was at first going to
lead the MISN B team, but after a practice at the reservoir, Tevin and Hugo
decided that he was too good a keeper to let go and since Mark was also able
to play outfield, Alex became the keeper. That would prove
to be some decision because in the Final, Alex would prove his worth!
So the season started, the first game was on a Saturday morning at noon and
we won only by 1-0 (goal scored by Peter). We were still
finding our feet.
That night Santiago had a house party at his place and that’s
when the night famous MISN Cheer was heard for the first time.
Oleeeeeeeeee, ole ole ole!
It was Giorgio, Santiago, Tevin, Hugo, Peter and Alex, who after a couple of beer, got all merry and started cheering.
We did well in the regular season only losing once to Goodfellas.
In the playoffs we easily dispatched of some team in the quarter-finals.
Next in the semis we played against Mondeo (where Sam and Francisco were still playing). I remember that it was a great game, on a sunny Saturday afternoon. We totally dominated them and easily won by a score of 2-0 (Peter and Tevin scored)
In the finals we met Goodfellas again.
They were very confident since they had already beaten us in regular season.
They actually had a more talented team than ours, but we had heart! Every
MISN players ran themselves to ground, defending attack after attacks. Amana,
man-marked their best player (Denis) and took him out of the game. Alex
was awesome in goal. We had our only chance at the beginning of the second
half and Peter scored! Shortly afterwards, Tevin
took a knock on his right knee and he had to limp off the field. There was
18 seconds left on the clock when Chris, instead of kicking
the ball out, passed it to one of their players and they equalized. We were
heart-broken. (Note: Actually Chris did not even realized that this was the
final, he thought that we were playing our quarter-final game!)
The score stayed the same in extra-time and we went on to penalty shots.
Peter was supposed to go first, then Hugo, Tevin, Ernesto and Santi.
Now, Peter and Hugo went the washroom and in the meantime, the referees had
already started the penalty shot contest!
Goodfellas went first and the scored. We were now looking for Peter and he
was nowhere to be found and neither was Hugo. So Tevin had to go first, he
limped to ball and was somehow able to perfectly lodged the ball in the side-netting
with the keeper going the wrong way.
1-1
They scored again 1-2
Peter made it 2-2
Goodfellas scored again 2-3
Hugo made it 3-3
Their next shooter came up and took a good shot, but this time Alex dived
and saved it!
Ernesto was next for us, but he blasted the ball in row Z.
Next was Denis for Goodfellas, their best player. He took a shot but Alex
made a brilliant save.
Our last shooter was Santi and while he lined up his hot, we all stood behind him sensing victory. Sure enough Santi scored and MISN was the Outdoor Champions!!!!!!!
It was party time, after collecting our mugs we all went to Bar des Pins
to toast our victory.
That season we also started the Chinese dinner tradition.
It was a defining season, because that team core would ensure that the MISN tradition would stay alive in the years to come.
